Abstract
1335748 Grinding CINCINNATI MILACRON-HEALD CORP 19 April 1971 [4 May 1970] 23329/71 Heading B3D A machine for grinding a ball-introduction notch in a bearing race comprises a workhead 14 mounted on a base A, a wheelhead 13 mounted on the base and having a spindle 48 with an abrasion wheel 49, means for producing relative motion longitudinally and transversely of the spindle axis between the workhead and the wheelhead, and apparatus associated with the workhead for holding the race and oscillating it through a predetermined angle about an axis parallel to and spaced from the spindle axis. The workhead 14 is mounted on a swivel plate 11, Fig. 3, on the base of the machine and consists of a shaft 12 on which is fastened a yoke 15 having arms 19, 21 provided with pads 22, 24 engaging the outer race of a bearing 16 mounted on an eccentric of a shaft 17 rotated by an hydraulic motor whereby the angular oscillation of the shaft 12 is effected. The shaft 12 consists of an outer portion 28, Fig. 4, and an inner portion 29. The outer portion is held against axial movement and is rotatably mounted in bearings in a sleeve 25 in the workhead. The minor portion 29 is axially movable in the outer portion under the action of fluid pressure supplied to one or other side of a piston 31 formed on the inner portion and slidable in a cylinder 32 in the outer portion. The workpiece 38, Figs. 6 and 7, such as the inner race of a bearing, is radially located by locating elements 39, 41 and a movable pad 42, and is clamped against a platen 44 mounted on a head 35 on the inner portion 29 of the shaft 12 by fingers 45, 46 mounted on a flange 36 on the outer portion 28 of the shaft 12. The wheelhead 13, which carries the spindle 48, Fig. 8, and grinding wheel, is mounted on a cross slide 51 movable by an hydraulic cross feed mechanism 52 for "controlled force" grinding. The upper part 53 of the cross slide is movable relative to a lower part 54 by a hand-operated screw 55 from a position #1 for grinding the notch 57<SP>11</SP> in an outer race, to a position #2 for grinding the notch 57<SP>1</SP> in an inner race. In operation, for grinding the notch in an inner race, the workhead is advanced to position the grinding wheel within the race and the mechanism 52 actuated to feed the wheel into the race at the same time as the eccentric on the shaft 17 is rotated by the hydraulic motor to cause the yoke 15 to oscillate the shaft 12 and hence the workpiece. The depth of grinding of the notch relative to the bottom of the groove of the race is controlled by a feeler 60 or 67, Fig. 10, according to whether an outer or inner race is being ground, which engages the bottom of the groove and is coupled to a transducer 61, 68. The output of the transducer is compared with that of a transducer 65 engaging a size stop 66 on the cross slide 51.
