Abstract

A machine for simultaneously face grinding the end surfaces of one or more rotating members 4 comprises two coaxial grinding discs 1 and one guide disc 2 laterally overlapped by the grinding discs and parallel thereto, the outer surface of the guide disc at least in the region which is overlapped by the grinding discs, and the inner surface of an outer coaxial annular section 3 defining a guiding channel for one or more of the rotating members, the annular section and the guide disc being rotatable relative to one another in such a manner that a rotating member in the guiding channel centra-rotates to the direction of the grinding disc and is also rotated about its own axis. The grinding wheels 1 rotate about a horizontal axis in the same horizontal plane as the axis of rotation of the guide disc 2 which is coaxial with the annular section 3. The inner surface of the annular section is formed with a groove containing a rubber or synthetic material member 5, Fig. 2, adapted to press the rotating members 4 against the outer surface of the guide disc as the latter rotates. The rotation of the guide disc is in the direction of arrow c so that the members 4 rotate in the direction d, which is opposite to the direction a of rotation of the grinding wheels. The rotating members are supplied to the guide disc from a channel 10 and a geared wheel 11 and are constrained in the axial direction by a control plate 7, Fig. 2, which is spring loaded and urges the members against an adjustably fixed plate 6. In another embodiment, the disc 2 is stationary and the section 3 is circular and driven in the same direction as the grinding wheels. In a further embodiment, the member 5 is located in a groove in the guide disc 2. In yet another embodiment, the grinding discs rotate about a vertical axis, and in a final embodiment, the section 3 extends over a full circumference so that the members 4 to be ground can effect several passes between the grinding wheels and are supplied radially or laterally to the guide channel.
