A lapping wheel 10 for use in a horizontal planar lapping machine comprises a malleable material, such as copper or a synthetic or plastics material, and diamonds made by the explosion method embedded in the surface of the wheel. Diamonds made by the explosion method are stated as having no projecting sharp edges and are more or less rounded off. The wheel is made by being placed on the machine without the diamonds embedded and then sprayed with a viscous deposit of the diamonds which are produced in powder form by the explosion method and have a particle size of 0�5 to 40 �. The diamonds are then pressed into the wheel by lapping rings 12 which are located for rotation on the wheel as the latter rotates by rollers 14, 16 mounted on arms 18, workpieces being located within the rings during lapping.
