Abstract
1317101 Grinding MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 7 Jan 1971 [30 March 1970] 883/71 Heading B3D A method of grinding a planar surface on a workpiece 12 comprises driving an abrasive belt 11 along an arcuate path, holding the workpiece with the plane at which the planar surface is to be formed essentially parallel to the axis of the arcuate path, rotating the workpiece about an axis substantially normal to and intersecting the axis of the arcuate path, pressing the workpiece against the abrasive belt with a pressure not less than 21 kilograms/cm.<SP>2</SP> to move the workpiece towards the abrasive belt, and stopping the movement when the plane is tangential to the arcuate surface. In apparatus for carrying out the method, the abrasive belt is entrained about rollers 17, 19 mounted on a frame 15. Roller 17 is driven by a belt or chain 22 from a motor 21 and has a surface of hard rubber material. Roller 19 is carried by a yoke 18 oscillatable about an axis normal to that of the roller by a piston-and-cylinder device 20 to effect axial reciprocation of the belt and ensure uniform wear of the belt, the operation of the device 20 being reversed each time an edge of the belt passes between pneumatic gauges 27 at each side of the belt. The frame 15 is connected by turnbuckles 39 to a second frame 38 supporting a pair of guide rods 36 along which a carriage 34 is slidable, the carriage supporting bearings 32, 35 for a shaft 31 which is rotatable by a belt or chain 42 driven by a motor 40 and carries a chuck 29 for holding the workpiece 12, such as a casting. The bearing 32 is laterally adjustable by a screw 37 so that the axis of the shaft 31 is not quite normal to the axis of the roller 17. The carriage is movable by an air cylinder 44 towards and away from the roller 17, the forward position being determined by stops 28. The motor 40 is controlled, in accordance with the force exerted by the device 44, so that the pressure of the workpiece against the abrasive belt is at least 21 kilograms per sq. cm. and the depth of cut per half revolution of the workpiece does not exceed a predetermined value. As the workpiece is advanced and the stops 28 prevent further forward movement, the speed of rotation of the workpiece is increased to reduce the grinding time at a lower pressure and prevent surface burning.
