Abstract
1352112 Grinding WEAN UNITED Inc 28 Sept 1972 [13 March 1972] 44898/72 Heading B3D Apparatus for duplicating the contour of a non-uniform peripheral groove of a master roll 81 in the periphery of a work roll 82, comprises a shaft arrangement 79, 80 rotatably carried by a base 31 and supporting the master and work rolls, a motor for driving the shaft means so that both rolls rotate at the same speed, a follower 71 comparable with the master roll and a cutter 66 co-operable with the work roll, a table 34 on which the follower and cutter are mounted, a connector arrangement between the table and base supporting the table for movement in its own plane, a shaft assembly 93 carried by the base and connected with the table, the shaft assembly controlling the movement of the table in a single adjustable direction which is determined by the angular position of rotation of the shaft assembly, and a device operable to urge the table and thus the follower and cutter in said direction to engage the periphery of the master and work roll, respectively. The master roll 81 and work roll 82 are mounted on shafts 79, 80 of shaft arrangement which includes a reduction gear-box 78 driven by a motor 77 mounted on an upstanding part 75 of the base 31. The base is in the form of a casing having a top plate 32 below which is the table 34 having blocks 50, 51 which extend through enlarged openings 33 in the plate 32. Block 50 is secured to a base-plate 52 of a slide 53 for a carriage 56 adjustable in the direction 57 and having an axially adjustable shaft 70 for the follower 71. The follower is clamped to the shaft by a nut and upon wear can be rotatably adjusted to present an unworn portion to the master roll. The block 51 is secured to the base-plate of a slide which is adjustable in two directions 60, 63 and has a motor connected by a belt drive to a shaft 65 carrying the cutter 66, which, as described, is a grinding wheel. The table 34 is connected by articulated connections 39, each comprising a pair of yoke-shaped links, to a sub-support 35 mounted on the casing 31, one diagonallyopposed pair of the connections being interconnected by a stabilizing bar 48, the connections permitting the table to move in an orbital path. A gear reduction housing 91 is disposed within the casing 31 and has a hollow shaft 93 in which is a stub shaft 92 secured for rotation therewith, a worm gear drive 93À1, 93À2 driven by a motor 100 effecting rotation of the shafts through a clutch 103 and shaft 102. When the clutch is disengaged, the shaft is rotatable by a chain drive and hand wheel 109. A head 94 of the shaft 93 is formed with a track 110 engaged by rollers 112, 113 on a plate 111 having a stub-shaft 114 received in a bearing 115 depending from the table 34. One end of the plate 111 is connected by a cable 118 guided over a pulley 119 to a weight 122 having an annular compartment which can be filled with lead shot. The weight acts through the cable on to the plate 111 to urge the table, and hence the follower and grinding wheel, towards the master and work rolls. The weight 122 has a flange 140 which can be engaged by rollers 141 on the bifurcated lever 142, 145 rockable about a pivot 143 by a screwjack 149 driven by a chain drive 150 and hand wheel 153 so that springs between the plate 111 and track 110 can retract the follower and grinding wheel from the master and work rolls. The plate 110 has an abutment 162 which co-operates with a pair of limit switches 161, 162 to limit the rotation of the shaft 93, and hence the plate and track, to approximately 180 degrees. Coolant is sprayed from a container 175 through a pipe 176 on to the grinding wheel. In operation, the master and work rolls are rotated at a higher speed than the shaft 93. The grinding wheel is adjusted by the hand wheels 61, 64 relative to the follower 71 with the weight 122 inoperative and the shaft 93 is rotated by the hand drive 109 to position the follower for grinding one edge of the groove. The weight is then released to cause the follower and grinding wheel to be urged towards the rolls and the clutch 103 activated to rotate the shaft 93 through 180 degrees. Thereafter the rotation may be stopped or the direction of rotation reversed.
