Abstract

1,062,787. Rolling. ALLIANCE MACHINE CO. May 20, 1965 [Aug. 13, 1964], No. 21498/65. Heading B3M. A machine for rolling rings comprises a carriage (20), for a mandrel (24) slidable on a bed (10), a work roll (11) journalled in the bed at (lla), an arm (26) pivoted on carriage (20) at (27), to allow removal of the work roll and work, said arm carrying a journal box (28) for the mandrel. Work roll (11) is driven from a motor through a shaft (17) and gears (16), (15), (12). Carriage (20), is moved along the bed by an hydraulic cylinder (22), and arm (26) is pivoted by an hydraulic cylinder (35). Journal box (28) is vertically adjustable on arm (26) by a motor (31), which drives a screw (30). Backing rolls (37) for roll (11) are carried by a yoke (38), actuated by an hydraulic cylinder (42), and driven edging rolls (44), (45) for the work, Fig. 3 (not shown), are carried on each side of the work roll by pedestals (46). The latter are rotatably carried on carriages (47) which are moved along the bed by hydraulic cylinders (49), and the edging rolls are adjusted vertically by hydraulic cylinders (58), (59). The angular position of rolls (44), (45) relative to the work roll is controlled by guide rolls (60), Fig. 2 (not shown), mounted on arms (61), which run in curved guides (62) on the base. Each of the pedestals (46) carries a work centring roll (63). Further work centring rolls (77), and work edging rolls (82), (83), are carried on a carriage (70), mounted on wheels (71), the carriage being moved along the bed by screws (74) driven by a motor (75). The position of rolls (77) is controlled by guide-bars (80) on base (10), and rolls (82), (83) are adjusted vertically by hydraulic cylinders (84), (85). The work roll and the edging rolls are all driven from the same source, so that their peripheral speeds can be identical. In operation, a journal box (28) is raised, arm (26) is raised, and yoke (38) is moved to the left, Fig. 1 (not shown), and work roll (11) is inserted. Rolls (37) are moved against roll (11), a workpiece is placed on mandrel (24), and arm (26) is lowered so that journal box (28) is lowered over the mandrel. Rolls (44), (45) are brought into contact with the edge of the workpiece, and carriage (70) is moved to engage rolls (82), (83) with the work. The drive is started and the work is rolled.
