Abstract
750,407. Rolling annular bodies. KENDALL, E. H. Nov. 25, 1952 [Nov. 30, 1951], No. 29733/52. Class 83(4). In apparatus for rolling metal tyre rims 27, Fig. 11, and comprising vertical rolls 21, 26 and horizontal rolls 52, 53 the inner vertical roll 26 is adapted to be readily raised clear so that blanks may be loaded horizontally into position. The roll 21, Figs. 1, 2, is mounted on a bearing 20 in guide-ways 19 on a housing 18 and is driven from an 'electric motor 25 through a gear-box 24. The roll 26 is mounted between a pair of C-shaped supports 28, its lower end engaging in a bearing of a cross-head 31, Fig. 4, and upper end being rotatably held in a cross-head 39 which can be raised and lowered. An inverted U-shaped member 37 spanning the supports 28 carries a hydraulic actuator having a piston 45 which raises the cross-head 39 in guideway 38 to lift the . roll 26 out of the lower cross - head 31. When the roll 26 is raised, blanks 27, Fig. 10, are fed into position from a roller table 94 over a table 93 extending transversely of the machine and adapted to be raised by rams 98 and springs 100 into the position for loading. With the blank in position the table 93 is lowered by the rams 98 out of the path of the rolls. For pressing the roll 26 into engagement with the work, each of the supports 28 is mounted on rods 47 guided in the housing 18 and loaded through a hydraulic ram 51 and cross-head 49. The horizontal rolls 52, 53 are mounted on a carriage 54 which is slidable into position along guide rods 10, 11. The rolls are driven through universally jointed shafts 71 from a motor 69 and gear-box 70 mounted on a second carriage 74 which is also slidable along the guide rods 10, 11 and connected to the first carriage 54 through pushrods 75. The housing 57, Fig. 8, for the upper roll bearing is vertically loaded by a hydraulic ram 62 and piston 63 substantially aligned above the rolls and the setting is limited by a tie-rod 64 and adjustable nut 66. For raising the upper roll away from the work a second ram 68 and piston 69 arranged in line with the centre of gravity of the housing 57 is used. Additional guide rolls 78 are also carried by the carriage 54 and are pressed radially into engagement with the work by hydraulic rams 81 having guide cylinders 83 (not shown) of rectangular section so that the axes of the rolls are maintained vertical. The rams 81 are each carried by further rams 87 which retract the rolls 78 out of the path of the work during loading and unloading. The carriages 54 and 74 are moved to align the rolls 52, 53 with the work by a hydraulic ram 76. A hydraulic feeler valve 150 (not shown) governed by a pushrod engaging the work controls the release of hydraulic fluid from the ram 76 so that the carriages are moved as the work gradually expands during the rolling process. An automatic hydraulic system operates the various hydraulic cylinders in sequence after the blank 27 is in position and the ram 51 loading the roll 26 is automatically prevented from exerting full pressure on the work until the rolls are being driven at a predetermined speed.
