Abstract
840,635. Forging. ENGLISH STEEL CORPORATION Ltd. June 11, 1958 [June 19, 1957], No. 19330/57. Class 83 (4). Apparatus for forging axles, shafts and the like from blooms comprises opposed synchronized forging tools 6, a bloom locating device 3 disposed transversely of the tools and means 14, 14a for intermittently rotating the bloom about its axis whilst located. The tools 6 have a number of die recesses 7 and include dovetail slides 6a slidably mounted in dovetail grooves on rams 5 working in double-acting hydraulic cylinders 4. Alternatively the rams 5 may be fixed and the cylinders movable. The tools are moved transversely across the face of the rams, for bringing the appropriate recess 7 on to the bloom axis, by an hydraulic or pneumatic ram 9 moving in a double-acting telescopic cylinder 8. Alternatively this ram and cylinder may be vertical and act on the tool through a rack and pinion device. Keys 11 moved inwardly by springs and retracted by hydraulic or pneumatic motors 12, 13, locate the tools in their forging positions. The bloom is gripped by jaws 17, 17a mounted on rotatable discs 14, 14a supported by ball or roller bearings 15, 15a, actuated by linkage 16, 18 and 16a, 18a respectively connected to discs 19, 19a which close the jaws by their own weight. The discs 19, 19a are raised to release the jaws by a pneumatic or hydraulic motor 24. Alternatively the jaws may be actuated by cams. The discs are driven by belts or ropes and the motor 24 may be controlled to release the bloom during actual forging. The bloom is supported by a vertical ram 26 working in a double-acting hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder 25 which causes inching movement during forging and has an air cushion to permit elongation of the bloom. A pointer and scale are used to indicate the vertical position of the bloom. The stroke and frequency of the forging tools may be varied manually or automatically. Mechanical operation may be used instead of hydraulic or pneumatic. The tools may act on a vertical or a horizontal bloom.
