[Class 83 (iv)] A machine for effecting straightening or analogous operations on tubes or bars of the kind having a,pair of spaced anvils on which the work is horizontally supported and acted upon on its upper side between the anvils by a movable part has in combination therewith a horizontally movable carrier a part at least of which may be raised to clear the. anvils during the horizontal movements. Loading and unloading of the work may thus be effected by mechanical means. A pair of anvils b provided with V or half-round recesses c are supported by rollers e in guideways f on a bed a and may be adjusted thereon by mechanism through a hand wheel g. A straightening tool k is carried by a hydraulic ram j. The work d is rolled from a deck on to rollers o on arms m which rest on springs n and are pivoted on slides t vertically movable on slides s, which are adjustably secured together by a bar q and are supported by rollers v, w on a fixed track bar r along which they may be moved to loading or unloading positions. The vertical movement of the slides is effected by racks and pinions, the pinions being slidable on a shaft 2. The shaft may be rotated by a pinion 6 and a rack 7 on a third slide secured to the bar q and also mounted on the track r, the rack being operated by the plunger 8 of an hydraulic cylinder 9. The rack 7 when it is moved upwards snaps over a catch 10 pressed forward by a spring 11 so as to hold the slides in raised position until the work is brought over the anvils. The catch is released by further raising the rack a short distance and then withdrawing the catch by a spring-controlled hand lever 12 and links 13. The work is lowered by gravity at a rate controlled by the plunger 8 until it is slightly above the anvils, where it can be rotated by the operator to detect parts requiring straightening. The movement of the work on to the anvils by the plunger during straightening is permitted by the yielding of the springs n. In another form the slides are movable horizontally on a track bar itself vertically moved either by a series of supports carrying racks and pinions on a shaft rotated by a pinion and rack from a hydraulic cylinder or by connecting the supports to hydraulic plungers. In another form a pair of tracks r<2> may be used on opposite sides of the anvils supporting arms m2 on springs 24. The vertical movements in this case may be effected -as in either of the previously described forms.
