Class 100(4) A manually operated long feed device for a typewriter or like machine comprises an end frame 25 which is attached to the typewriter. frame with a gear wheel 52 secured to the platen shaft and driven through a gear 54 from a gear 53 of a handle unit 50. The gears 53, 54 are replaceable and adjustable so that the ratio can be varied for use with different form length so that one cycle of the handle unit 50 always advances the stationery one form length. Stops 84 can be fixed at any peripheral point on an indexing plate 75 for engagement by a movable stop 114, Fig. 4, on the outer arm 102 of the handle unit 50. Arm 102 is pivoted at 104 to an inner arm 100 secured by set screws 56 to the gear 53 so that pressure on the grip 116 in an operating direction will pivot the arm 102 against a spring 120 from the position shown to a position in which the stop 114 is in the path of the stops 84. When the grip 116 is released the spring 120 restores the arm 102 so that the stops 84 are not engaged during normal line spacing. In use a web of forms is fed into the machine until the first line is in typing position and a stop 84 is then fixed opposite an index mark 132 in a position to engage the stop 114 when the arm 102 has been tilted against the spring 120. The form is then advanced by the platen to the next typing position where another stop 84 is positioned.
