Abstract
788,164. Ink-ribbon mechanism. ENGLAND, H. M. Dec. 12, 1955 [Oct. 27, 1954; June 3, 1955], Nos. 30964/54 and 15939/55. Class 100(4). A typewriter or typewriter attachment feeds a ribbon 15 during letter-spacing carriage movement and holds the ribbon stationary during carriage return movement, the feeding means including synchronized drives 16, 17 and 32, 33 acting on the ribbon at each end of its run to avoid tensional stress in the ribbon. As shown, the drives comprise serrated driving rolls 16, 32 and spring-biased pressure rolls 17, 33 the rolls 16, 32 being driven through a unidirectional ratched mechanism by a belt 24 attached to either end of the carriage. An adjustable spring detent 34 prevents reverse rotation of the drives during a carriage return movement. In embodiments, not shown, the drive rolls, may be driven by sprocket pulleys rotated by a perforated plastic belt or by a pinion rotated by racks attached to the carriage.
