Abstract
1420471 Packaging apparatus BAKER PERKINS HOLDINGS Ltd 10 Jan 1974 [12 Jan 1973] 1690/73 Heading B8C [Also in Divisions F2 and B5] Cyclic variation of the rate of rotation of an output shaft 26 is derived from a constant speed input shaft 25 via two crank-link mechanisms 28, 30, 31 and 29, 32, 33 connected between each end of an intermediate shaft 27 and the input and output shafts 25, 26, respectively. The intermediate shaft 27 is movable by a pivoted bar 34 from a position coaxial with the input and output shafts 25, 26, in which the constant speed, i.e. uniform angular velocity of input shaft 25, will give an identical uniform angular velocity to output shaft 26, to selectively adjustable positions (Figs. 2A and 2B) laterally offset from but parallel with the coaxial (as shown) input and output shafts 25, 26 to provide the desired cyclic variation in the rotation of the output shaft 26 whilst maintaining one output revolution at shaft 26 for each revolution of the input shaft 25. The output shaft 26 may be connected to a printing die (24) or the sealing and cutting dies (19) or the web feeding rollers (21) when used on a moving web (16) of packaging material which is drawn around articles in a continuous tube form (17) in packaging machinery (Fig. 1, not shown) wherein different printing and packaging of different size articles requiring varying time periods for each machine cycle time are readily achieved. Various alternative cyclic variable crank-link mechanisms are illustrated in Figs. 8 to 12 (not shown). In the arrangement of Figs. 8 and 9, the input and output shafts (25, 26) are parallel to each other and connected via similar crank-link arrangements (31, 30 and 33, 32) to a pair of meshed gears (28A, 29A) arranged on a centrally pivotable bar (34) whereby cyclic variation is achieved as the bar (34) carrying the gearwheels (28A, 29A) is adjustably rocked about its central pivot (35). In the arrangement of Figs. 10 to 12, the input and output shafts (25, 26) are coaxially arranged in nested form, the intermediate shaft (27) being rotatably mounted in the bar (34) adjustably pivoted at (35) by a screw-threaded shaft (46), a disc (50) replacing the cranks (28 and 29).
