[Also in Divisions B8 and F2] In a packaging machine for the continuous production of tubular bags, apparatus is provided for driving the transverse sealing jaws and permitting adjustment of the path of the jaws to allow for the bag-length and the speed of the packaging tube through the machine. Uniform rotary movement is transmitted from a driving shaft 19 to a sprocket mounted on the shaft 14 of a slot-and-crank 13. The rotation is converted into rotary movement of a driven crank 3 by a slide block, the rotation of the crank 3 and a spur-gear 9 connected to it on crank-shaft 5 being non-uniform due to the displacement of the centre of rotation of the slot-and-crank 13 relative to the centre-of-rotation of the crank 3. The shaft 14 of the slot-and-crank 13 is mounted in a displaceable plate 15 so that the degree of non-uniformity of the motion transmitted to the crank 3 is continuously variable. The spur gear 9 meshes with a similar gear 10 connected to a further driving crank 4, and the cranks 3 and 4 control jaw supports which extend parallel to each other and the ends of which move on slide blocks in guides. The sealing jaws (not shown) are resiliently mounted in the jaw supports. An adjusting shaft, actuating a spindle, allows the height of the sealing jaws to be adjusted by moving a plate on which the cranks 3, 4 are mounted. The apparatus described is provided symmetrically on each side of the packing tube which moves through the apparatus in a direction from left to right as shown in Fig. 2.
