Abstract

811,842. Laminates. CHEMISCH - TECHNISCHE FABRIK G.m.b.H., [formerly RUWA G.m.b.H.]. May 6, 1955 [May 7, 1954], No. 13236/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 140. A roofing material comprises a support layer containing an inorganic fibrous material, e.g. glass fibre web or mineral wool cardboard, impregnated with a synthetic resin, bitumen, isobutylene, polyisobutylene or butyl rubber and a water-repellent surface layer covering one side of the support layer and united therewith, the surface layer being a foil composed principally, apart from fillers, of polyisobutylene having a molecular weight of at least 100,000. In one example, a glass fibre web in the form of staple fibres or rovings of linen or twill weave, twisted or loosely woven, is impregnated with a paste consisting of polyisobutylene, carbon black, zinc oxide, blown bitumen, china clay and heavy petrol, the petrol evaporating during a subsequent drying operation. The impregnating step is then repeated using the same paste and a foil which comprises polyisobutylene having a molecular weight of about 200,000, carbon black, polyethylene and ground slate is united with the surface prior to drying by a calender roll. The laminate is secured to a roof by a bituminous adhesive and may be painted, e.g. with aluminium paint. In another example, glass fibre webs or webs of mineral wool are impregnated with bitumen and the foil then applied, either before or after passage of the webs between cooling rollers. In a third example, the impregnating paste comprises butyl rubber, carbon black, blown bitumen, china clay and heavy petrol, the operation being as in Example 1 above.
