Abstract

1,219,023. Laminates. COMPAGNIE DE SAINT-GOBAIN. 31 July, 1968 [8 Aug., 1967; 14 May, 1968 (2)], No. 36554/68. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions B2 and D1] A sound insulating product consists of mineral fibres, e.g. glass, of length at least a decimeter and diameter of 20-40 Á felted in generally parallel planes and bonded by 20- 50% wt. of elastomer in the form of a latex and an additive which produces chemical linkage between the mineral fibres and the elastomer and/or coagulation of the elastomer. The elastomer can be applied as an aqueous emulsion to the felt and may be polychloroprene, carboxylated polystyrene, polystyrene, polybutadiene or acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer. The additive may be mercaptosilane resorcinol-formaldehyde resin with acrylic thickener, methyl cellulose, ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulphate or ammonium chloride. The product can be made by collecting the fibres on a conveyer which is subjected to a vacuum, applying the binder, partially drying by squeezing, compression or gravity, further drying, e.g. with infra-red heaters, and crosslinking the polymer binder. If the product is wound into a roll, it can be reheated under tension during unwinding so as to remove transverse folds. The product can have its surface pores filled by coating with (a) binders, e.g. styrene-butadiene copolymer, polystyrene, polyvinyl acetate, bitumen, phenol-formaldehyde resin and starch; (b) fillers such as chalk, silica, diatoniaceous earth and perlite; and (c) mineral or organic fibres of diameter of 1 to 10 Á. Alternatively the product can be coated, preferably after the above mentioned reheating with a paste of vinyl resin which is cooled and set on the felt surface. The product can be laminated with paper, carpet moquette, glass muslin, wood, tiles, metal, glass-resin complexes or polyvinyl chloride using binder e.g. aqueous polyvinyl acetate.
