Abstract

1346721 Coated products GAF CORP 20 April 1972 [21 April 1971] 18436/72 Heading B2E [Also in Division B5] Fire-resistant roofing membranes comprise an asphalt-saturated organic felt 21, which may be of wood fibre (optionally with paper or rag pulp); two coatings 22, 24 of asphalt of higher softening point than the base saturant, which are separated by a fire-resistant metal foil 23, which is preferably of aluminium but may be of tin or lead, and a decorative surface layer of mineral granules 25. The coatings 22, 24 may include mineral stabilisers or fillers, e.g. ground limestone, rock dust, and (coating 24 in particular) fire-resistant compounds, e.g. antimonous oxide, perchloropentacyclodecane, phosphorus compounds. The back surface of the felt 21 may be provided with an asphalt coating 26 and a layer 27 of finelydivided mineral material, e.g. sand. The foil 23 may be 0.00025-0.006 thick. The membrane is made continuously by impregnating the felt 21 by immersion and then applying the other layers in succession, the asphalt coatings being doctored by rollers and the finished material pressed between rollers.
