Abstract
801,388. Laminates. KOPPERS CO., Inc. Feb. 8, 1955 [Feb. 17, 1954], No. 3773/55. Class 140. A laminated board structure consists of two flexible sheets having interposed therebetween and affixed thereto a cellular structure of a density in the range of 2 to 12 pounds per cubic foot, such structure having been produced by the expansion of polystyrene beads containing, for each 100 parts by weight, 5-30 parts by weight of an aliphatic hydrocarbon boiling in the temperature range 35‹ to 60‹ C. Specified flexible sheets are Kraft paper, sheets of regenerated cellulose, polyethylene or vinyl resins such as polyvinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride resin, aluminium foil, jute paper board, chip paper board, manila paper board, straw board or textile material. The opposed surfaces of the flexible sheets may be coated with adhesive or alternatively adhesive may be coated on or admixed with the expandable polystyrene beads before the latter are interposed between the sheets. Specified adhesives are starch adhesive, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, starch adhesive modified with urea-formaldehyde resin, sodium silicate, polyvinyl alcohol, asphalt or polystyrene latices. In an illustrated embodiment sheets of Kraft paper 10 and 11, drawn from rolls 12 and 13, pass over applicators 14 and 15, whereby starch adhesive is applied to the opposed surfaces thereof. The sheets then pass over rollers 16 and 17 and enter the heating zone 18. Expandable polystyrene beads 23 are disposed between the sheets by disposing means 19 and doctor blade 20. After leaving the heating zone the sheets, with the expanded cellular polystyrene 24 disposed between them may optionally pass between rollers 21 to compress the board structure to a desired thickness. Thereafter the board passes through a cooling zone 22. The board may be used for the construction of shipping containers.
