Abstract

559,528. Compound sheet materials. KING, E. P., and WOOD DEVELOPMENT, Ltd. July 10, 1942, No. 9634. [Class 140] [Also in Groups X, XXIII and XXXIII] In a composite wall or sheet having sheets of veneer, plywood or metal separated by a lightweight filling, the filling consists of spaced parallel strips 13, Fig. 1, of light-weight timber, plywood or light-weight material faced with veneer, arranged on edge and secured to the sheets by an adhesive, the strips being spaced apart by spacers 14 made of balsa wood, cork, corrugated cardboard, expanded vulcanite or light-weight foamed material. The spaces between the strips may be filled with calcium alginate, expanded vulcanite or foamed resin. To form a curved wall for the fuselage of an aeroplane or motor boat, spacers and stringers 14, 13, Fig. 5, are secured by an adhesive to a sheet 11 on a former 16 and covered with a sheet 12, over which is clamped a sheet 19 of lead or tin foil, fabric or rubber. The assembly is subjected to heat and pressure in an autoclave. Specification 559,527 is referred to.
