Class 146(3) A fountain pen ink feed has a reservoirto-nib supply duct 17, 19 on its upper side, an overflow-chamber system 7a, 7b below, and a connecting duct 13 (to link the chamber system both with the outer air and with the reservoir) arranged on the upper side of the chambers. As applied to a twopart hard-rubber ink feed wherein the part 3 above the nib 4 has two longitudinal capillary grooves 17 to lead ink from the reservoir to a crescent-shaped slot 19 at its nib end, and the lower part 2, recessed to receive the nib, is impressed &c. with chambers 7a, 7b decreasing in width on either side of the web 9 abutted by the nib, the duct 13 consists of notches, Fig. 3, cut alternately on opposite sides of the tops of the webs 8, 9 and all of equal size or decreasing towards the reservoir; a tapered notch 15 in a web 14 on the feed part 3 extends the duct to the reservoir, and is sufficiently small to produce a membrane of ink by surface tension which normally breaks only to admit air to the reservoir in replacement of ink used. The web 10 which abuts closely against the bottom of web 14 has two vertical slits sufficiently narrow to prevent breakage of the surface tension membrane, but which supplement the notch 15 to allow free outflow of ink when excess pressure arises in the reservoir; the overflowing ink then fills the chambers in succession from the right (Fig. 1) via the duct 13, and also (via the supply duct 17, 19 and a hole 18 in the nib) from the extreme left, the intervening air being exhausted by a hard rubber tube 12 from the chamber 7a next to the web 9. The invention may also be applied to a single-part ink feed, e.g. (a) the notches 13 being in line centrally of the ink feed top (they may have a capillary ink supply tube inserted through them), or (b) the chambers 7a, 7b being cut in upwardly from below and extending round the feed periphery to longitudinal grooves at their ends corresponding to the duct 13, the ink supply capillary then being arranged centrally at th top of the feed.
