Abstract
In a composition adapted to be dissolved in water to produce a germicidal iodine solution which comprises an N-monochlorosulphonamide, e.g. chloramine-B or chloramine-T, and an iodide, e.g. potassium iodide, capable of reacting with the sulphonamide in the presence of water to produce iodine, the sulphonamide has been partially dehydrated to such an extent that substantial reaction and release of iodine does not take place during storage of the composition, while the crystal structure of the fully hydrated sulphonamide is retained. The lower limit of the degree of hydration of the partially dehydrated sulphonamide, expressed in mols. of water per mol. of anhydrous sulphonamide, is about 0.5. The upper limit depends somewhat on the sulphonamide employed. It is about 1.5 for chloramine-T and about 1.75 for chloramine-B. Example I specifies the use of chloramine-T which has been heated in vacuo at a temperature of 85 DEG C. to produce a product having a degree of hydration of 1 and a relative vapour pressure of 0.1, in a composition which also comprises potassium iodide, citric acid and sodium bicarbonate. Example II specifies the use of chloramine-B which has been heated in vacuo at a temperature of 90 DEG C. to produce a product having a degree of hydration of 1.25 and a relative vapour pressure of less than 0.1 in a composition which also comprises potassium iodide and sodium dihydrogen phosphate.ALSO:In a composition adapted to be dissolved in water to produce a germicidal iodine solution which comprises an N-monochlorosulphonamide, e.g. chloramine-B or chloramine-T, and an iodide, e.g. potassium iodide, capable of reacting with the sulphonamide in the presence of water to produce iodine, the sulphonamide has been partially dehydrated to such an extent that substantial reaction and release of iodine does not take place during storage of the composition, while the crystal structure of the fully hydrated sulphonamide is retained.
