Abstract

809,086. Locking rotary members. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. June 5, 1957 [June 19, 1956], No. 18980/56. Class 80 (3). In order to prevent rotation of a shaft 25, Fig. 1, except when driven by the rotor 11 of a fluid pressure actuator, a flange 26, Fig. 2, on the shaft 25 is frictionally locked to a fixed ring 31 by oppositely-acting pairs of spring- loaded wedging balls or rollers 28 which are released by axially-extending projections 22 on a disc 19 splined to the rotor as the lost motion between dogs 21, 27 coupling the disc 19 and flange 26 is taken up. In the actuator shown an annular space 13, Fig. 3, between the rotor 11 and a housing 10 has a partition 14 to one or other side of which pressure liquid is supplied so as to move a vane 12 on the rotor through an angle of somewhat less than 360 degrees. It is stated that actuators employing gas pressure or effecting rotations of more than 360 degrees may be employed.
