Abstract

807,705. Sewing machines. SINGER MANUFACTURING CO. April 25, 1957 [May 24, 1956], No. 13186/57. Class 112 A sewing machine needle comprises a scarfed or cutaway portion 17 having a surface 20 curved about an axis parallel with the axis of the needle, and a thread eye 15 opeing into said surface, the axis of said eye lying in a plane t which is parallel with the axis of the needle and intersects a tangent plane p to said surface along the line o of contact of said tangential plane and surface. The shank of the needle is formed with a flat side 12 which co-operates with the needle clamp so as to incline the eye 15 in the direction of approach of the looptaker beak 18 and maintain the tangential plane p parallel with the path of movement of the leading edge 21 of the beak, to provide a clearance between the latter and the surface 20. The angle of inclination, a of the eye is preferably from 3 degrees to 8 degrees.
