In a needle - holder of the kind in which a needle 15 having a flat face 25 on its shank is held with that face against the flat bottom of a groove 14 in the needle-bar by a movable clamping member or gib 21 actuated by means such as a screw 18, the gib is formed with a groove to receive the needle; the needle-releasing movement of the gib is preferably limited to a value less than the difference between the maximum and minimum diametral dimensions of the needle shank, so that there cannot be room to insert the needle except in the right orientation. In the form shown the screw 18 is carried by the usual clamping band 17 fixed to the needle-bar by a screw 22, and the clamping band and needle-bar are formed with cylindrical recesses fitting the cylindrical gib 21, movement of the gib away from the needle being limited by engagement of a locating finger 28 and the shank of a thread guide 29 (both on the gib) with the inner surface of the clamping band; a groove in the lower end of the needle-bar equal in width to the gibreceiving recess permits assembly of the clamping band and gib on the needle-bar.
