807,434. Making briquettes. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. July 26, 1955 [July 26, 1954 ; Oct 14, 1954], Nos. 21775/54 and 29633/54. Class 87(2). Briquettes are made by compressing particles in a closed mould 10, Fig. 1, shaped to produce a main portion with a tapered zone 12b and a protruding portion of smaller cross-section 12a which is then forced wholly or partly into the main portion whereby the mass undergoes angular shear strain of such magnitude and distribution as to produce a briquette of high strength, the required conditions being found experimentally as disclosed in Specification 807,433. A plate 11 is moved sideways and the briquette is ejected by further movement of the plunger 13. In a double plunger mould, Fig. la, the particles are first lightly pressed by a plunger 22 in a support 23 and the compacted mass is moved in the support to the position shown in dotted lines and then pushed into the mould 20 against a stationary plunger 24 and the end of a sleeve 25, forming a body P with a tapered zone and a plug, Fig. Ic. With the plunger 22 stationary the plunger 24 advances and forces the plug into the main compressed body. The plunger 24 then stops and the plunger 22 retracts, followed by the plunger 24 which, by a collar 26, advances the sleeve 25 and thereby ejects the moulded briquette. The plungers 22, 24 may be operated by single speed reversible hydraulic rams under the control of cams. The length of the compressed plug depends on the position of the collar 26. The arrangement in Fig. 1, may be duplicated by having an additional plunger opposite the plunger 13 and a throat and tapered portion corresponding to the mould portions 12a, 12b.
