1,263,706. Extrusion/hopper and plunger machines. DAVY & UNITED ENG. CO. Ltd. 8 Sept., 1969 [12 Sept., 1968], No. 43465/68. Heading B.5A. In the extrusion of glutinous carbonaceous or ceramic material containing gaseous inclusions, in particular a mixture of petroleum, coke and coal-tar pitch to give a " green " extrudate suitable for carbon pyrolysis, a charge of material is loaded into a hopper 10 on top of a gate 26, the orifice in die 6 is closed by a plate 8, gate 26 is moved horizontally to allow the charge to fall into chamber 2 and, prior to completion of compaction by ram 4, the chamber and passageway 12 are degassed by a source 13 via a line 17. As shown, hopper 10 may be sealingly closed by a lid 16 and so be degassed whilst the charge is therein via line 19 and valve 15.
