Abstract

1,249,945. Compression moulding. K. J. MAWSON, and W. ASHCROFT. 31 July, 1970 [16 Oct., 1969], No. 50973/69. Heading B5A. Apparatus for moulding thermosetting plastics materials to form an article 14 having a bore from which an undercut recess extends into the article comprises a die 1, a punch 2, a laterally extensible matrix 3 having a recess-forming rib 4, and a matrix engaging member 9 detachably connected to a rod 10 movable axially of the die to retain the matrix in an extended condition during the moulding operation. The matrix comprises two pairs of segments 5, 5 and 6, 6 with converging sides 8 and providing a frustoconical cavity into which the frusto-conical member 9 is forced during the moulding. The punch has a recess 15 engaging the matrix sides. The moulded article is removed from the opened die by raising the rod whereby a shoulder 16 thereof lifts the article and matrix to allow the removal of the matrix segments.
