Class 27 Coin-fre@ prepayment mechanism for rendering available an article or a quantity of gas, electricity or other commodity comprises a coin slot closing disc o rotatable by a knob g and having a rigid projecting arm h which engages with a quantity wheel striker plate d to hold it in the position to which it may be set by optional coins of different dimensions inserted through a slot or slots. An inserted shilling strikes a pivoted member b and moves a pin m on the member b to the top of the first leg of a slot k in the striker plate d so that a dog r engages a quantity wheel t. As the closing disc is rotated, the arm h moves with it and its pointed end engages a hole or depression v in the striker plate and locks the plate. On insertion of a halfcrown, the pin b is moved to the bottom of the second leg of the slot k, a second dog s on the striker plate engages both quantity wheels t and u and the end of the arm h locks under the edge of d<1> of the striker plate. If no coins are inserted the arm h engages a hole wand holds the striker plate in inoperative position. Full stroke of the closing disc is ensured by a pawl engaging depressions in the rear face of the coin plate a.
