Abstract

806,381. Desurfacing by fusion; making cylinders. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. July 5, 1957 [July 27, 1956], No. 21347/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). The surface of a metal workpiece 18 is etched by bombarding it with a stream of gaseous ions passing through a screen 28 so as to form a pattern on the surface. A chamber 10 has an outlet 12 connected to a vacuum pump and an inlet 14 connected to a source of inert gas such as argon. An aluminium anode 16 is connected to the positive of a direct current supply of 3-15 kilovolts whose negative is connected to the workpiece 18 and to the screen 28 maintained at a predetermined distance from the workpiece. The latter may comprise a base metal 20 having a surface layer of chromium 22. The invention may be used for etching the inner surfaces of internal-combustion engine cylinders and cylinder liners and in this case the anode 16 is a rod and the screen 28 is a cylinder concentric with the anode. A specific example is given.
