[Also in Groups XXII, XXIV, XXIX and XXX] A pneumatic ram 5 and cylinder 4 has means for locking the ram relative to the cylinder comprising a screw threaded spigot 3, axially extending from the base of the cylinder, a tapped socket formed axially in the ram for the reception of the spigot 3, whose threads 3a co-operate reversibly with threads 5a cut in the neck 5b of the socket, and a locking ring 6 at the upper end of the cylinder 4, with screw threads 6a which co-operate non-reversibly with screw threads 5c formed externally on the ram. When locking is required, the locking ring 6 is rotated so as to bring the load supporting flanks of the threads 5c and 6a into contact. The locking ring 6 may be biased towards its locked position.
