802,041. Coating by vapour deposition. MANSFELD, H. May 12, 1955, No. 13739/55. Class 82(2) In a method of depositing a layer of photosensitive material on a carrier strip, the strip is continuously moved under vacuum past a source of vapours of said material which condense on the strip As shown, carrier strip 11, which may be made of cellulose film or paper, is continuously guided from feed roll 17 to take-up roll 18 past crucible 13, said crucible being heated as by electric means 15 to produce vapours of photo-sensitive material 14 which emerge through opening 16 of the crucible. In alternative embodiments, (a) the individual components of the photo-sensitive material are vaporized from separate containers, e.g. silver and bromine may be separately vaporized to form a silver bromide layer, (b) the feed and take-up rolls are contained in a housing surrounding the evacuated vaporizing chamber, the housing being separately evacuated, and (c) the carrier strip is "seeded" (to facilitate the condensation of the photo - sensitive material) by forming an initial evaporated layer of silver thereon. Electrically heated wires may be used in place of the crucibles, and may be vaporized together with the photo-sensitive material by capacitor discharge. Reference is made to the production of photographic films and photosensitive registering strips.
