Abstract

1,166,999. Vapour deposition of silver halide. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Dec. 5, 1966 [Dec.6, 1965], No.54318/66. Heading C7F. Light sensitive silver halide films are formed by vapour depositing the halide into a continuously moving support in a vacuum chamber, the walls of said chamber and other parts of the apparatus which are in contact with the halide vapours being made of or coated with a material which does not react with the halide e.g. Ag, Ni, (Registered Trade Mark) "MONEL", glass or plastics. The silver halide source should also be heated in an inert material of Ag or graphite. As shown in Fig. 1 the support 15 of paper, plastics or subbed (Registered Trade Mark) "ESTER" is continuously passed via rollers 18 and 19 through slits 31 and 32 above a silver halide source 30 heated via electrode 29. The vacuum chamber 10 has condensation plates 22, 23, 24 cooled by liquid nitrogen and the support is preferably chilled to below its outgassing temperature. All the materials within the evaporating chamber 11 are made of or coated with Ag, Ni or "MONEL" and a movable mask may be located between the source and support. A monitoring device coupled to automatic controls to regulate the speed of the support is also provided to regulate the thickness of deposit.
