Abstract

742,066. Coating by vapour deposition. BRITISH DIELECTRIC RESEARCH, Ltd. Feb. 8, 1954 [Feb. 9, 1953], No. 3582/53. Class 82(2). In an apparatus for depositing material 1 upon a surface, e.g. strip 6, by evaporation in a vacuum, a heated container 2 for the said material has an outlet passage 3 for the escape of vapour to the surface to be coated, and a shield 8 in the form of a block of metal of closed shape, which may have within it passages 10 for the flow of cooling liquid, fits around the wall of the outlet passage and extends laterally sufficiently to screen the surface to be coated from radiation from the container and any hot parts, e.g. heating elements 5, associated with it. The metallising of a strip of a plastic material, e.g. polystyrene, and the deposition of an inorganic salt on tin-foil are referred to.
