Abstract
811,263. Coating by vapour deposition. VAMECO-TRUST FUR VAKUUM TECHNIK REG. July 1, 1957 [July 3, 1956], No. 20756/57. Class 82(2) Before being vapour-coated in vacuo with e.g. aluminium, silver or silicon monoxide, strip material, e.g. of paper or plastic, is degassed by being re-wound in a vacuum. As shown, coil 72 bearing strip 27, which may just have been hot-impregnated and consequently at a temperature over 100‹C., is mounted in a vacuum chamber and said strip is re-wound on to a reel contained in capsule 41, both the chamber and the capsule being maintained at a pressure of 10-<SP>3</SP>mm.Hg. Degassing is aided by passage of the strip through the glow discharge emanating from electrodes 74, 75. When re-winding is complete, vacuum-tight slot 55 of capsule 41 is closed, said capsule is mounted in the vapourcoating apparatus (Fig 1, not shown) and the slot re-opened for exit of the strip only when the apparatus has been pumped out to the same degree of vacuum as prevails within the capsule.
