Abstract

801,943. Brick kilns. RUSSELL, E. D. B. April 3, 1957 [April 25, 1956], No. 12751/56. Class 51 (2). A kiln for firing bricks and other ceramic ware comprises firing chambers 1 and 2 on opposite sides of a central flue structure defined by refractory concrete walls 4, base 3 and roof 8, L- shaped wall panels 16 disposed side by side, and removable roof panels 27 extending between said flue structure and said wall panels. A partition 9 divides the flue structure into a hot air flue 11 and a waste gas flue 10 communicating with the firing chambers by branch flues 12 controlled by dampers 15 and with a main flue 13 leading to a stack. Each wall panel 16, Fig. 5, comprises an L-shaped refractory concrete casting 18 strengthened by 1-section girders 17 and transverse members 19. Some wall panels, Fig. 7, have lower side walls 22 extending downwardly from the base, which with a temporary wall 39, Fig. 1, define a damper chamber 23 by which the branch flues 12 communicate with the firing chambers, ports 24 being provided to give access to the dampers 15. The wall panels may be placed in position by a fork-lift truck. Each roof panel 27, Fig. 11, comprises a refractory concrete casting strengthened by an 1-girder 28 formed with a lifting lug 35 engaged by hoists 34 travelling on rails 36. Fuel ports 31 are formed in adjacent edges, which also have complementary joggles for snug seating. The ends of the girders 28 are formed with hooks 29 engaging tangs 21, Fig. 5, on the wall panel girders 17. The kiln is normally worked continuously, the firing zone travelling through the chambers 1 and 2 in opposite directions, and after firing, appropriate roof panels are removed, followed by the temporary walls 39, and finally the wall panels thus facilitating rapid cooling. The flues 10, 12 and 13 may be omitted, the necessary draught being induced by portable fans coupled to the damper chamber 23.
