Abstract
690,909. Open hearth furnaces. DETRlCK, CO.. M. H, Oct. 31, 1951 [March 12, 1951], No. 25474/51. Classes 51 (i) and 51(ii). Cleaning of the slag pockets 15 of an open hearth furnace is facilitated by the provision of massive doors or bulkheads 23, comprising a girder framework 32 lined with refractory brickwork 33 and hinged to I-beam structural members 21, whereby they can be swung into an open position by cables 64 attached to brackets 66 on said framework 32. The framework comprises upper and lower horizontal channel bars 34, 35 interconnected by vertical I-beams 36 across the inner faces of which are disposed horizontal angle bars 37 and 38, the latter carrying further horizontal angle bars 39 whose upwardly extending flanges engage sockets in hanger brackets 47. The outer face of the framework has a lower channel member 40 with a plate 41 disposed directly above it. At each top corner is a bracket 31 including a plate 42 secured to the upper channel bar 34, a downwardly projecting flange 43 secured to the adjacent I-beam 36 and a reinforcing web 44. A shaft 30 engages each bracket 31 and also engages brackets 29 secured to the I-beam structure members 21 disposed against the front face of each side wall 16. The refractory lining 33 comprises slotted bricks 46 disposed in pairs over the T-heads of holding members which in turn slide over the T-heads of the hanger brackets 47, Fig. 5 (not shown), the latter being provided with bottom platform members supporting the bricks. Each bracket 47 supports eight holding members i.e. sixteen bricks. The lining 33 is divided into areas bounded by corrugated steel plates 60 disposed between the bricks both vertically and horizontally and flat steel plates 61 are disposed between adjacent bricks. After closing the doors, the spaces left between the same and the adjacent slag pocket brickwork for ease of manipulation are closed by loose bricks 62 bonded by a fireclay mortar 63.
