A kiln for the continuous firing of bricks and other ceramic ware comprises a permanent centre wall 10 lined with refractory 11, permanent end walls 12, and a plurality of removable inverted L-shaped units 16 forming the side walls and roof sections and centre wall respectively having interengaging stepped formations and steel locating bars 31 and 39. Each unit comprises upright girders 20 with transverse stiffening- bars 22 rigidly joined to roof girders 19 by gusset-plates 23, and having a lining of refractory concrete slabs 24 backed by steel plates 25. Adjacent girders 20 are connected by hooks engaging bosses fixed to said girders, Fig. 2 (not shown). The roof members are covered by sheet steel or iron plates 28, and some or all are formed with fuel ports 26. The hearth comprises a layer of hard-core 13, refractory concrete 14 and a top layer of brickwork 15, all bounded by steel joists 21 forming a footing for the units. Some of the units are formed with a lower closable port 32 to which a portable fan 35 and chimney 37 may be attached for control of the firing. Sufficient units are provided to cover the proportion of the hearth area used in burning and cooling the ware, and they may be moved by the fork-lift truck used for charging.
