Abstract

829,201. Furnace walls. LACLEDECHRISTY CO. Oct. 5, 1956, No. 30416/56. Class 51 (2). Refractory tiles 74 lining the chill wall of an open hearth furnace are supported on shelves 66 on horizontally spaced vertical runner bars 45 and held in vertical alignment by verticallyspaced pairs of hangers 55 engaging the runner bars on opposite sides, each hanger engaging two adjacent tiles so that they can pivot about a vertical axis. The runner bars 45 are supported by hook parts 47 engaging an upwardly directed flange on a horizontal beam 42 secured to the structure of the furnace and a lower beam 41 holds the runner bar in position. The shelves 66 are supported by brackets 69 with lugs 70 engaging the runner bars 45, Fig. 4, and are located by nibs entering holes in the runner bar. The top tiles of a stack carried by one shelf are spaced from the shelf above, and the gap between the top tile and the lowest tile of the stack, which projects beyond the shelf, is filled with a corrugated metal sheet 85. The space between the top tile and the shelf may be filled by a corrugated sheet of less thickness. Each tile 74 has a recess at one side leading to a blind hole which engages a lug 60 of a hanger 55. Similar runner bars and hangers support the tiles lining the nose of the furnace, and the tiles may have interlocking grooves and ridges extending part way across the tile faces perpendicular to the axis of the pivotal support, Fig. 19, not shown.
