Abstract

716,030. Regenerators for coke ovens &c. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE CONSTRUCTION DE FOURS, and CASSAN, J. H. F. April 24, 1951 [April 28, 1950], No. 9515/51. Class 64(1) In heat regenerators for coke ovens or other furnaces having individual cells separated from each other and from the surrounding walls in order to prevent deformation, the cells are each surmounted by a conical or pyramidal cowl, those of adjacent cells, one for air and the other for gas, acting as a burner. The individual cells, Ra, Rg for air and gas respectively, are mounted over air and gas inlets A, G, and communicate with hair-pin flues P 1 , P 2 surrounding carbonization chambers C 2 or the like. The cells are constructed of hollow blocks 7, containing refractory plates 8 arranged in checker fashion and surmounted by cowls 5, the cells being covered with a refractory metal if desired. The spaces 4 between the cells and the walls 38 of the regenerator may be left empty or they may be filled with a compressible material such as refractory mineral wool, pulverant material such as pulverized brick, or clay. A block of four cells may be built up on a metal plate 12 having recesses to accommodate the cells over apertures 14 for the admission of gas and air. The plate is supported by screwed rods 16 from an overhead beam 17 which can be lifted by an eye bolt 18. A thin sheet metal plate 19 of refractory alloy is attached to the rods 16. Blocks 21 of compressible material which will be burnt when the oven is started, e.g. cork, wood fibre, or felt, are placed against and at right angles to the plate 19 around the cells; alternatively compressible refractory material such as cellular concrete or asbestos felt may be used. After lowering the block into position, refractory concrete framing the lower masonry of the oven is poured around the blocks.
