799,148. Belt fastenings. NOE, W. M. Dec. 5, 1955, No. 34822/55. Class 44 A safety belt buckle comprises a frame 1 including a fixed clamp jaw 4 and means 3 for attachment to a belt A, the clamp jaw 4 and means 3 defining an entrance slot 6 for a belt end B, a lever plate 8 hinged to the frame 1 extending over and beyond the fixed clamp jaw to form a handle 11, a movable clamp jaw 16 cooperating with the fixed jaw and with the lever plate to form a guide means for the belt end. The means 3 is a bar joined to the jaw 4 by side members 2. The plate 8 is hinged to the members 2 by a pin 7. The lever plate 8 is provided with marginal flanges 9 which are received between the side members 2 and the jaw 16 is pivoted to the flanges 9 by means of a pin 13. The jaw 16 has a sloping knurled face 17 which faces a knurled face 5 of the fixed clamp jaw 4. Surrounding the pin 7 is a spring 18 one end of which is anchored in the bar 3 and the other end of which bears against the pin 13 so that the lever plate 8 is urged towards the fixed clamp jaw 4. A second spring 19 surrounds the pin 13 and one end of this spring loops over the spring 18 and the other end rests on a lug 20 of the jaw 16 to urge the jaw against the lever plate 8. The arrangement is such that normally on opening and closing the buckle. the movable jaw and lever plate move in unison but should the movable jaw bind on the belt, on opening, the lever plate will rise independently of the movable jaw and the pivotal movement of the pin 13 around the pin 7 will then draw the movable, jaw away from the fixed jaw until it is freed.
