Abstract
798,918. Protective arrangements. SIEMENS SCHUCKERTWERKE AKT.-GES. Aug. 22, 1956 [Aug. 26, 1955], No. 25693/56. Class 38 (4). An electric surge arrester comprises a transparent housing composed of a material the transparency of which is unaffected when the arrester becomes unserviceable, and indicating means arranged to cause a removable deposit on the inner surface of the housing when the arrester becomes unserviceable. The arrester comprises a glass housing 1 closed by a cap 2 to hwhic is secured an earth terminal 4. The enclosed space contains a resistor 8, an arc gap chamrbe 11 and a fusible member 13 having a coating 17 of lacquer. When the arrester operates the fusible member 13 becomes hot, causing the lacquer 17 to burn off and be deposited on the inner surface of the glass housing 1 thus giving a visual indication that the arrester has operated. The eventually fusing of the member 13 interrupts the current path, thereby removing the short-circuit or earth path. Alternatively the member 13 may be constructed of a magnesium alloy which embodies simultaneously the function of the deposition medium and that of current interruption. After the arrester has functioned it may be stripped and cleaned and the housing re-used.
