Abstract

782,902. Fusible cut-outs. E.M.P. ELECTRIC, Ltd. June 29, 1955 [Aug. 9, 1954], No. 23070/54. Class 38 (1). [Also in Group XXXV] A device for isolating a lightning arrester for electric power lines, when an earth-fault current of prolonged duration passes through the arrester following a nearby lightning strike, comprises a length of wire 19 which is adapted to fuse under such conditions, whereupon an earth-lead E is ejected by means of spring 18. The fusible material is preferably a nickelchrome alloy, tungsten or molybdenum, where. by the wire is surge-resistant and, by virtue of its inverse time-current characteristic, is adapted to be graded to the line fuses so that the isolater does not respond unless there is danger of damage to the arrester or associated plant. The wire is at least partly surrounded by a ceramic tube 20 or ceramic beads which facilitate arcextinction under fault conditions.
