Abstract

1,049,738. Automatic circuit breakers; twopart couplings. COOK ELECTRIC CO. Aug. 22, 1963 [Aug. 30, 1962], No. 33275/63. Headings H2B and H2E. A protector for electrical (e.g. telephone) lines consists of a plurality of protective units 24 plugged into a number of base units 22 (see Specification 1,049,740). Each unit 24 includes an overvoltage protective spark gap 183 between a line terminal 141 and an earth terminal 185 and an overcurrent protective switch between the line terminals 141, 151. The overcurrent switch comprises a ratchet wheel 219 held set by a fusible mass of solder and a pawl 221 engaged therewith against a spring 232 by a push-button 224. On overcurrent the solder melts, releasing pawl 221 from ratchet 219 to break the circuit and ejecting the pushbutton to indicate the tripped condition. The pawl 221 which is permanently in contact with line terminal 141 by a brush 237 earths it by contact 244 in the released position; a signal terminal 182 is simultaneously earthed by contact 228 to energize a lamp, bell &c. The push-button is bored at 252 to admit a test probe (not shown). Any unit 24 may be replaced by one of the alternative units of Figs. 10, 11 (not shown). That of Fig. 10 includes a spark gap 183 as before together with a jack 261 for a test plug; alternatively a direct cable connection may be provided. The unit of Fig. 11 provides means of interrupting the lines manually by rotating a cam 281.
