Abstract

543,207. Lightning arresters. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Oct. 11, 1940, No. 15165. Convention date, Oct. 26, 1939. [Class 38 (iv)] A lightning-arrester having a valve-type excess voltage responsive element 2 (e.g. moulded blocks of silicon-carbide crystals and a binder) a switch gap part 11, 12, a quench-gap element 6 consisting of a stack of dished electrode plates of brass and a casing part 21 rupturable at a discharge current flow of a pre-determined, e.g. 50 amperes magnitude, is characterized in that the element 6 is capable of interrupting a current of the pre-determined magnitude or less. The valve element 6 is sealed off from the quench gap so that gases will not affect the insulator 13 separating the two parts 11, 12 of the spark gap by a barrier element consisting of spring washers 3 surmounted by a metal tube 4 surrounded and sealed by gum or wax 5. The parts of the assembly are kept together in the insulating housing 1 by a spring 15 under the contact 11. The barrier element may be arranged above the quench-gap element instead of below.
