Abstract
796,518. Treating feathers. SMITH, Inc., A. Jan. 30, 1956, No. 2969/56. Class 63 A process for increasing the filling power of feathers, e.g. for making land fowl feathers suitable as a filler for mattresses, pillows and as an insulating medium for clothing, comprises digesting the feathers in a solution of sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid or phosphoric acid and a water-soluble alum, sulphate, dichromate or phosphate at a temperature from 70‹F. to 185‹F., neutralizing the feathers, e.g. with soda ash, washing them and drying the feathers while non-constrained to permit the feathers to curl and fluff due to internal stresses developed therein. The feathers are centrifuged to remove most of the water and dried in an air stream within a rotating tumble type drier. The solution may consist of sulphuric acid and alumn having a pH of about 0.1 to 0.85. After treatment the quill 10, Fig. 2, is curled, the rachis 11 are bent and curled and the barbs 13, Fig. 4, are raised and extend generally at right angles to the rachis.
