Abstract

The water imhibition of cellulose hydrate products such as regenerated cellulose fibres, filaments, yarns, films, and the like, is reduced by subjecting them, while they contain between 30 and 40 per cent of water, to the action of heat in a closed vessel. The moisture content is adjusted to the required proportion by centrifuging the wet products until they contain about their own weight of water and then drying in air at room temperature or by passing a current of warm air through them, or the air-dry products containing about 11 per cent of moisture may have water added to them until they have the required proportion. The heat treatment may be effected at temperatures of 60-160 DEG C. The water imhibition, determined by immersing the products in distilled water at 20 DEG C. for 15 mins., followed by centrifuging for 3 mins., may be reduced to about half of that of the untreated material. In an example, skeins of viscose artificial silk yarn are centrifuged and then allowed to dry by exposure to air until the moisture content is about 35 per cent on the weight of the moist yarn. The yarn is then placed in an air-tight vessel and maintained at 150 DEG C. for 30 mins. The yarn is then removed and drying is completed. Specification 201,526, [Class 2 (ii)], is referred to.
