Abstract

A fibrous web of improved wet strength is made by treating a preformed web with a solution of pH above 9 of carboxymethyl cellulose and a water-soluble alkaline-curing resin, drying then acidifying the web. The resulting web has a paper pH of 3-6. The resin can be the reaction product of epichlorohydrin and a polyamide which may contain secondary amine groups. The polyamide may be derived from polyalkylene polyamine and saturated or unsaturated aliphatic or aromatic C3-10 poly carboxylic acids. The gum: resin ratio may be greater than 1:1 e.g. 2 to 15:1. The acid used can be HCl, H2SO4, acetic fumaric or lactic acid, or acid-producing salts, e.g. Al2(SO4)3 and NH4Cl. The web may be partially or completely dry prior to treatment the resulting web can be washed, pressed and dried.
