Abstract
511,540. Artificial wool. COURTAULDS, Ltd., COTTERILL, E., and BOULTON, J. Feb. 21, 1938, No. 5473. [Class 15 (ii)] Artificial wool is produced by treating cellulosic artificial yarns or fibres with a waterproofing agent containing a fatty or other hydrocarbon radicle which forms a compound with the cellulose, and with a water-soluble intermediate condensation product of a heathardenable synthetic resin, drying and mechanically crimping or curling the material and heating to insolubilize the resin. A preferred water-proofing agent is that sold under the registered Trade Mark " Velan," a preferred resin is urea-formaldehyde resin. In an example, hanks of regenerated cellulose are soaked in a solution comprising a urea-formaldehyde precondensate, " Velan " and some ammonium sulphate, hydroextracted, dried, twisted to impart the desired crimp, heated for 3-5 mins. at 145-150‹C. and untwisted. If desired, the twist may be fixed by steaming before subjecting to the heat treatment.
