Abstract

An adduct of silica aerogel with an organic isocyanate may be obtained by direct reaction of the constituents by any of the methods described in the parent Specification. As in the parent Specification the aerogel may be dried azeotropically before forming the adduct, and any of the isocyanates referred to in said Specification are also suitable for use with silica aerogel. Specification 756,966, [Group III], is referred to.ALSO:An adduct of silica aerogel with an organic isocyanate may be obtained by direct reaction of the constituents by any of the methods described in the parent Specification. Suitable aerogels may be prepared by replacing the water in a hydrogel prepared from sodium silicate and an acid, with a water-soluble organic solvent and heating under pressure or by heating a hydrogel at a pressure greater than the critical pressure. As in the parent Specification the aerogel may be dried azeotropically before forming the adduct, and the isocyanates referred to in said Specification are also suitable for use with silica aerogel. Specification 756,966 also is referred to.ALSO:An adduct of silica aerogel and an organic isocyanate is suitable as a filler or reinforcing agent in natural rubber. As in the parent Specification, the adduct may be ball-milled and then blended with rubber in a mill, but preferably is mixed with rubber latex and subsequently co-precipitated therewith. Specification 756,966 is referred to.
