Abstract

793,410. Detachable propelling units for strips &c. BECKER, J. July 5, 1956. No. 20799/56. Class 114. A telescopic outboard motor unit permitting adjustment of the depth of the propeller beneath the surface of the water and adapted also for steering the boat &c. to which it is attached comprises a depending tube 12 supporting a propeller hub 11 and itself carried by a piston 13 slidable in a tube 10 fixed to the ship, hydraulic fluid being introduced into the annular space 15 beneath the piston 13 and between the tubes 10, 12 to raise the 'propeller which may sink again by its own weight on withdrawal of the fluid. A power shaft 19 in the stationary tube 10 is splined on to a power shaft 20 in the tube 12 and a similarly connected tube 17 co-operates with a tube 18 in the tube 10 to effect steering. A stuffing box 14 closes the lower end of the tube 10 and the piston may be made double acting by using a second stuffing box above it in the tube 10 and supplying pressure fluid to the chamber so formed, between the stuffing box and the piston.
