In an apparatus fixed on a grease drum for pumping grease, air is supplied through conduit 4, Fig. 1, and acts continually on one side of piston 11 and is controlled by a distributing valve 13 to act on piston 8 to reciprocate the pump. Connected to piston 11 are hollow rods 17 and 18, hollow piston 19 and seating 21. Fig. 2 shows the pump at the bottom of its stroke. On the first stage of the upward stroke piston 19 &c. rises until washer 24 reaches the upper end of sleeve 35, sleeve 35 and cylinder 32 being held in the lower position by the spring 36. On the second upward stage piston 19, &c., sleeve 35 and cylinder 32 rise together. The cylindrical slide valve 45 frictionally engaging the tube 7 by an elastic ring 46 also rises on this second stage opening the ports 48, which admits grease to the space below the cylinder 32. On the first stage of the downward stroke the piston 19 &c., the sleeve 35 and cylinder 32 move down and the cylindrical slide valve 45 closes the ports 48. The trapped grease is forced past the fine gauze filter 39 and ball valve 42 into the cylinder 32. During further downward movement, the spring 36 is compressed and the piston 19 discharges the grease through ball valve 25, hollow rods 18 and 17 to the outlet 5 via opening 31 in the rod 17.
